Bark Vessel, 3
Bark Vessel, 3 is a handmade one-of-a-kind ceramic vase. In the Bark series, I integrate the texture of tree bark onto the surface. I'm interested in pushing the boundaries of what can be a bowl or vessel. The result is a functional sculpture.
This piece is hand-formed using high-quality porcelain clay. I then begin the back-and-forth process of sculpting and adding bark texture. Bark wraps around the top of the vase and transitions to a smooth and glossy surface. A deep brown wash emphasizes the textured bark areas. The smooth surface goes from sky blue and purple to glossy white. I'm interested in the idea of bark emerging from a traditional vase surface and overtaking it.
