Bark Vessel, 1
Bark Vessel, 1 is a handmade one-of-a-kind ceramic vase. In the Bark series, I integrate the texture of tree bark onto the surface. I'm interested in pushing the boundaries of what can be a bowl or vessel. The result is a functional sculpture.
Each piece is hand-formed using high-quality stoneware clay. I then begin the back-and-forth process of sculpting and adding bark texture. The surface of Bark Vessel 1 transitions from smooth to textured. The textured bark areas are in deep browns and reds. The smooth surface is glossy white. I'm interested in the idea of bark emerging from a traditional vase surface and overtaking it.
